Campaign Planning - If it ain't on paper, it ain't a plan

This session on campaign planning and strategy will cover a tried and true campaign planning process, best practices for picking a strategy, and motivation to go do it! A bit more than Campaign Planning 101, this session will also feature pointers aimed at more experienced campus organizers and activists.

Connecting the Tubes: Winning Your Campaign Online

Learn from 2 online gurus how to give your campaign that 'umph you need to get noticed. Today's campaigns exist as much in the interwebs as they do on the street. Spend an hour with the online directors from the Energy Action Coalition and Focus the Nation as they chat best practice models on how to get the most out of your twitter, facebook, emails, google groups, etc.

Creating a Visual Media Event

We all know a picture is worth a thousand words. Looking from the perspective of journalists, we will explore the most effective visual media events used in campaigns recently to generate a checklist of what elements create successful visual media and how this is vital to getting a good pitch from media, as well as getting the right message to campaign targets.

Creative Activism

This workshop is aimed at exploring new and innovative approaches to meeting goals of a campaign or project from outside the box of traditional tactics. Using campaign goals of participants, we will explore new forms of getting attention to our issues, putting pressure on targets, and engaging groups of stakeholders through social media, flash-mob gatherings, unique and focused visuals, and a checklist for success (including media) to meet your goals in a fun, creative way.

Creative Tactics Training


This training will focus on a series of creative tactics local groups can use to be more effective. This workshop will begin with an overview of designing a strategic issue campaign and the unique challenges and opportunities in the current political climate. We will explore the use of spectacle for earned media, using Backbone Campaign experiences as case studies.

Do It Yourself Silk Screening

Have you ever wanted to design your own image for shirts or banners? Do you have a message that you want to share with the world, or use to cover up name brands on your clothing? This hands on workshop will show you how to design and print your own silkscreen design. Silk screening is way you can make lots of prints with little money.

Don't think of an elephant - how to brand your campaign effectively


Hope for a clean energy future or fear of climate catastrophe? What you say, how you say it and the context you say it in matters. Participants will learn the basics of creating, framing and delivering a message.

Have you ever wondered how highschoolers can contribute to solving global warming?  Come to this workshop to learn more about how to organize at highschools to create meaningful and lasting change and meet other highschoolers from the west coast

Lobbying: How to Successfully Influence Decision Makers

In order to achieve our organizations' goals, we must influence the decisions of people in power whether they are school officials, city planners or U.S. Senators.  Learn how to incorporate meetings with decision makers into your plan of action by choosing the right target, forming a directed message, and holding an effective meeting.  Discover the empowerment that comes from making your voice heard!

Media 101- The S&#! That's Fit to Print

Learn the basic elements of media messaging with relevant information for both beginner organizers and experts.  There will be a focus on traditional media sources, including how to message, set up editorial board meetings, write an LTE/Press Release/Press Advisory. Learn how can you get your message out to the public using effective framing and language.

Non-Violent Direct Action Basics

Non Violent Direct Action is an effective way to further a campaign. This workshop will introduce the basic concept of Non violent direct action, NVDA, through discussion, role play and hands on activities. We will role play a basic action that is relevant to the groups concerns so please come with ideas of what issue you are working on or would be interested on acting upon.

People, Planet & Profits: Using Energy Efficiency to Change the World

Learn the basics of energy assessment and conservation in this interactive workshop.  Envirolution will lead a site assessment to discover potential energy savings.  This workshop will cover the six main areas of energy consumption: lighting, appliances/plug load, hot water, building envelope, heating and cooling.  Based on Project ReCharge, Envirolution's new high school service-learning curriculum, you'll learn how to reduce energy consumption, save money, and lower emissions.

Strategic Event Planning

During this interactive training we will explore the use of events as tactics in a successful campaign strategy.  We will discuss techniques and strategies that make planning go smoothly as well as practice an event plan for an efficient and successful event.  Come build your knowledge and confidence in strategic event planning!

Understanding and Dismantling Oppression

What is anti-oppression (aka collective liberation) and why is it important for us as organizers? Come to this workshop to create a dialogue around how our organizing affects people and is closely tied to social justice.  We will be working to dismantle systems of oppression and bring about empowerment and equality.  This will be a split track training: one track focusing on principles and the other on working towards constructive models of collective liberation.

Using the Power of Story to Motivate Action

This training will cover how to craft a public narrative by combining a story of self, a story of us, and a story of now.  The material for this training comes from Marshall Ganz, a professor emeritus at the Harvard Kennedy School of Law and former grassroots organizer with Cesar Chavez.
